Sewer Backups in Corte Madera: How to Protect Your Home Before Winter Storms
Why backups happen here and what to check before the first big storm
When the first big storm of the season hits, the sewer calls follow. In Corte Madera, low-lying streets, bay-mud soil, and older laterals mean a small problem in your sewer line can become a backup in your laundry room or yard fast. If you're already seeing slow drains or gurgling, call or text Local Plumbing at (415) 234-0370 before the rain makes it worse.
We've had several Corte Madera sewer calls in the last couple of weeks, including a laundry drain backing up from a blocked main line. Here's why it happens and what you can do before winter.
Why Corte Madera Is Prone to Sewer Backups
- Flat, low-lying neighborhoods. Much of the east side of town, including Madera Gardens, Marina Village, and the streets near the bay, sits on fill and bay mud. Ground settles unevenly over time, and so do the sewer laterals buried in it. Settled pipe creates "bellies" where waste collects.
- Older laterals. Many homes in Old Corte Madera, Chapman Park, and around Christmas Tree Hill still have original clay or cast-iron laterals. Clay joints let roots in; cast iron corrodes from the inside.
- Hillside homes too. On Christmas Tree Hill and the slopes toward Larkspur, laterals run steeply downhill and can shift or separate at joints.
- Winter rain. Storm water can get into cracked laterals and the public sewer, raising flows. If your line is already partially blocked, that extra water has nowhere to go.
Warning Signs to Take Seriously
- Toilets gurgling when the washing machine drains
- Slow drains in more than one fixture, especially on the lowest floor
- Water backing up in a shower or laundry drain
- Sewer smell in the yard or basement
- A wet or sunken spot over the sewer line
- An outdoor cleanout cap that's loose, pushed up, or overflowing
A backup at the laundry drain or lowest shower is usually the first place a mainline problem shows up, because those fixtures sit lowest in the house.
What We Do on a Sewer Call
- Clear the line with the right equipment for the pipe: a cable machine for roots and blockages, hydro jetting for grease and buildup.
- Camera inspect the lateral so you can see exactly what's in there: roots, bellies, offsets, cracks, or collapsed sections. You get the recording.
- Locate and mark the line if repairs may be needed, so you know depth and route before anyone digs.
- Give you honest options. Often a cleaning and a maintenance schedule is enough. If the pipe is failing, we'll walk you through spot repair, full replacement, or trenchless options.

Cleanouts and Backwater Protection
Two small parts make a big difference in Corte Madera:
An accessible cleanout. Many older homes don't have a proper two-way cleanout outside, which makes clearing the line harder and more invasive. Adding one makes every future service faster and cheaper.
Overflow and backwater protection. An overflow relief cap on your outdoor cleanout is designed to pop off during a backup so sewage spills outside instead of inside your house. Messy, but far better than a flooded laundry room. A backwater valve can also help keep sewage from flowing back into the lowest fixtures. Whether you need one depends on your home's elevation relative to the sewer main; we'll tell you if it's worth it.
If your home has fixtures below the sewer line, like a downstairs bath or laundry, you may also have an ejector pump. See Ejector Pumps Explained.
What You Can Do Before the Rain
- Know where your outdoor cleanout is and keep it uncovered
- Don't put grease, wipes, or food scraps down drains (see why is my kitchen sink backing up?)
- If you've had roots before, schedule a cleaning before winter, not during a storm
- If your home is older and the lateral has never been scoped, get a camera inspection now
Corte Madera Sewer FAQs
Why does my toilet gurgle when the washer drains?
Usually a partial blockage in the main line. The washer pushes a lot of water at once; if it can't get past the blockage, air gets pushed back through the nearest fixtures. Get it checked before it turns into a backup.
Who is responsible for the sewer lateral?
In most of Marin, the property owner is responsible for the private lateral from the house to the public sewer. The exact dividing point depends on the local sanitary district. We can help you find out where yours is.
How often should I have my sewer line cleaned?
If you've had root problems, many homes do best with a cleaning every 12–24 months. A camera inspection tells you what schedule makes sense for your line.
Is trenchless sewer repair possible in Corte Madera?
Often, yes, depending on the pipe's condition, depth, and route. A camera inspection is the first step to know whether trenchless is an option.
