Bradford White Water Heaters in Marin & Sonoma
Asked an AI assistant which water heater to buy and it said Bradford White? We install and service Bradford White regularly. Here are straight answers: who makes it, why it's sold only through plumbers, what the warranty really covers, and which models fit your home.

Is Bradford White a good water heater?
Yes, it's a solid, well-built brand, and we put them in Marin and Sonoma homes regularly. Is it "the best"? No brand is best in every house. The right size, venting and installation matter more than the name on the tank.
What we can tell you is what's checkable:
- Made in Michigan. Bradford White builds its water heaters at its plant in Middleville, Michigan.
- American and employee-owned, headquartered in Ambler, Pennsylvania, and in the water heater business since 1881.
- Pro-only. Sold through plumbing professionals, not big-box stores.
- Vitraglas tank lining with Microban, Bradford White's enamel coating that protects the steel from water.
- ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year five times (2020–2024).
Why AI assistants mention it: Bradford White is one of the big American tank makers, has a long track record, and is popular with plumbers, so it shows up a lot online. That makes it a fine brand to shortlist. Just let a plumber who sees your install space make the final call.

Why you can't buy Bradford White at Home Depot
Bradford White chose in 1992 to make its products for professional installation only. You buy one through a licensed plumber, who gets it from a plumbing supply house.
What that means for you
- The heater is installed by someone licensed to pull the permit and do the gas, venting and seismic work.
- Bradford White runs a 24/7 technical support line and a training center for the installers who work on its heaters.
- You won't see a shelf price to compare. You'll get a written price for the installed job instead.
Why installation matters for the warranty
- The residential warranty excludes installs that break local code.
- It also excludes heaters without a proper temperature-and-pressure relief valve.
- And it excludes heaters on a closed water system with nothing to handle thermal expansion. In many Marin and Sonoma homes that means an expansion tank (more on our tank water heater page).
Bradford White models that fit North Bay homes
Bradford White makes everything from a basic gas tank to heat pumps and tankless. Here are the four lines most relevant to Marin and Sonoma homes.
Gas tank, atmospheric vent
The like-for-like swap for the 40 or 50 gallon tank in your garage or closet. Bradford White's residential gas tanks feature the Defender Safety System, its flammable-vapor ignition-resistant design. The ICON System gas control needs no outside electricity, so the heater keeps working through a power outage.
eF Series high-efficiency power vent
A blower vents the flue gases, so it suits homes where an old chimney-style flue can't be reused. It needs an outlet nearby. We check the vent route and electrical before quoting it.
AeroTherm heat pump
50, 65 and 80 gallon models on 240V. The heat pump runs in room air from 35 to 120°F and switches to electric elements outside that range. An optional duct kit (up to 75 ft combined) lets it work in a smaller room. Vacation mode drops it to 50°F. Learn more on our heat pump water heater page.
Infiniti tankless
Condensing gas tankless units, ENERGY STAR certified. The Infiniti GR and L have a built-in recirculation pump; the GS and K don't. For how tankless compares with a tank, see tankless water heaters.

The Bradford White warranty, decoded
Tank years are in the model number
On residential tanks, the digit after the size code is the tank warranty: 1, 6, 8 or 10 years. An RG240 T6 N has 6 years; an RG240 T10 N has 10. Parts are covered for 6 years.
Heat pump and tankless
AeroTherm heat pumps carry 6 or 10 years on the tank and the same on parts, again set by the model. Current Infiniti GR, GS and L units list a 15-year residential heat exchanger warranty and 5 years on parts.
What it doesn't pay for
Labor, permits, removal and reinstallation aren't covered, and a replacement unit only carries what's left of the original term. Single-family homes get the full term; other uses get much less.

Bradford White vs. State, A.O. Smith and Rheem
All four companies make good tank water heaters. The real differences are who owns them and where they're sold.
Independent, pro-only
Employee-owned, based in Ambler, PA. Tanks made in Middleville, MI. Sold only through plumbing professionals.
Sister brands
Two brands, one owner: Milwaukee-based A.O. Smith (NYSE: AOS), which bought State in 2001. Plumbers pick up State at the supply house; homeowners find A.O. Smith Signature on Lowe's shelves.
Paloma-owned
Rheem is headquartered in Atlanta and owned by Japan's Paloma. Its Performance line is sold at The Home Depot, and Ruud is a sister brand.
Our honest take: for most straight tank replacements we reach for State, mainly because local supply houses keep them in stock and that gets your hot water back faster. If you'd prefer a Bradford White, we install them regularly and will quote it the same way.

-
Permit and code work
Permit, seismic strapping, expansion tank where needed, relief-valve discharge line and a new gas flex connector. Details on our tank page.
-
First fire and handoff
We check draft and burner operation, set a safe temperature, haul the old heater away, and leave you the model and serial for warranty checks.
What a Bradford White costs installed
These are the same ranges published across our site. The brand is only one part of the price.
Why two quotes for the same Bradford White can differ: a heater in an attic or crawlspace takes longer to swap than one in a garage; an eF Series power vent or an AeroTherm needs an outlet or new circuit; an older flue or undersized gas line may need work; and code items the previous install skipped get added. Tankless pricing is on our tankless page. 2026 pricing. Every home is different. Free estimate.
$150 off new water heater installations.*Terms apply. Must notify Local Plumbing at time of booking. Includes water heaters, tankless water heaters and heat pump water heaters. Valid for a select time only. See current offers.
A Bradford White job from our files
50 to 75 gallons for a family running out of hot water
Cause: a large household outgrowing a 50 gallon tank's recovery.
Fix: replaced it with a 75 gallon Bradford White and improved the flue venting.
Total: $7,280
Recovery, not just gallons
A bigger gas tank still has to vent safely through the flue. That's why the venting was part of the job, not an afterthought.
Marin & Sonoma rules to know before you buy
The Air District gas rule (proposed changes)
- Bay Area Air District Rule 9-6 currently requires new gas tank heaters under 75,000 BTU/hr to be zero-NOx if made after January 1, 2027.
- On October 2, 2026, the Air District released proposed amendments that would push that date back and add exemptions. The July draft said January 2028. The Board is scheduled to vote November 4, 2026.
- A working gas heater can stay and can still be repaired. See our 2027 gas rule page.
Heat pump rebate in Marin
- MCE offers up to $675 toward a heat pump water heater for owner-occupied single-family homes (owned and lived in for 12+ months).
- The rebate goes through a participating contractor. Local Plumbing is an MCE participating contractor, so we handle the paperwork.
- Northern Sonoma County (Healdsburg, Windsor, Cloverdale) is under a different air district. We'll check which rules apply to your address.
Bradford White FAQ
Is Bradford White better than Rheem or A.O. Smith?
Not across the board. All three make dependable tanks. Bradford White's differences are that it's American and employee-owned, builds its tanks in Michigan and sells only through plumbers. Sizing and installation affect how long a heater lasts more than the brand does.
Can I buy a Bradford White myself and have you install it?
Bradford White doesn't sell to homeowners; its heaters go through plumbing professionals. We supply the heater as part of the installed price.
Where are Bradford White water heaters made?
Bradford White's water heater plant is in Middleville, Michigan. The company says its products are made in America using materials and components from around the world.
How long is the Bradford White warranty?
It depends on the model. Residential tanks carry 1, 6, 8 or 10 years on the tank (shown in the model number) and 6 years on parts. AeroTherm heat pumps have 6 or 10 years. Labor isn't included.
Does Bradford White make a heat pump water heater?
Yes, the AeroTherm series, in 50, 65 and 80 gallons on 240V. If your panel is tight, ask us about 120V plug-in heat pump models from other brands, including State.
Will a Bradford White gas water heater still be allowed after 2027?
You can keep and repair the gas heater you have. For new installs, the Air District's proposed amendments (vote set for November 4, 2026) would delay the zero-NOx date for small gas tanks. We'll update this page after the vote.
Do you repair Bradford White water heaters?
Yes. We service Bradford White tanks, heat pumps and tankless units, whoever installed them.
